At Zebra I was tasked with creating a mechatronic system to automate the repair triage process for their mobile computers. It was a completely open ended project, and in 10 weeks I went from brainstorming to a functional prototype.
Every device that is sent in for repair must be tested for 6 functionalities. The front and back camera, the barcode scanner, the touchscreen, the side buttons, and the device vibration must all be tested manually
I began brainstorming and sketching ideas for a motion system. These are some of my initial sketches
I then created a concept model to determine the exact layout of the fixture. I used this to determine what component I would need and ordered them
With the components in hand, I created a model of every piece. I then created a precise assembly to ensure everything would fit before manufacturing custom parts.
I then 3D printed all the custom pieces and began assembling the robot
I wired everything together and programmed the system
